Hula-hooping for fitness is trending nationally and local hoopers are whooping it up.
A hula hoop fitness class has quickly become popular on Tuesdays at Inner Circle Family Martial Arts Center in Portland.
“When I was child and teenager, I loved hula hoop,” said Amy Milardo, an active grandmother who cares for her mother and toddler grandson. “I decided to try a class and fell in love with it.”
Milardo saw the unusual exercise session posted on social media by Inner Circle staff so she decided to give it a shot.
The class is offered by Certified Hoop Fitness instructor Cori Magnotta, a Portland stay-at-home mother to a toddler, Luigi. Magnotta always had a real knack for hula hooping, she said. It’s a skill she used to win the 1996 Miss Connecticut Teen title and America’s Fit Mrs. 2016.
